What it actually costs to land a part

The part number is rarely the expensive bit. A $10 seal ordered on its own from Japan can cost several times its own value to ship, and owners regularly report freight bills that dwarf the parts in the box. Two rules cover most of it:

  • If a cross-reference exists, buy domestically. Filters, plugs, belts, brake friction and most service consumables have US equivalents. Buying those locally removes international shipping from the job entirely — which is the whole reason the cross-reference column exists.
  • If it is Japan-direct, never order it alone. Rows marked Japan-direct have no US equivalent on record. Freight is charged per shipment, so the fix is to keep a running list and place one order — a single consolidated shipment beats three small ones by a wide margin.

Model-specific body panels, trim, glass and interior pieces are almost always Japan-direct. Plan those around a single order rather than discovering the shipping cost one part at a time. Your service log is a good place to keep that list as things come due.
