If it starts on a jump but dies or will not restart later, the battery is not being charged.

The thermostat. They stick closed after decades and block coolant flow completely — about $12 and half an hour. First checks: Warm the engine and feel the upper radiator hose. Fans and fan relays both fail at this age. Look at the coolant. Brown, or with debris floating in it, means the radiator is corroding internally.

Black with carbon means clean it with throttle body cleaner. Listen for hissing, then spray around the vacuum lines and intake manifold base. A change in RPM locates the leak.
