Buying a new off-road kei truck

This is not a 25-year-rule import. These are current-model vehicles brought into the country as off-highway equipment and sold against UTVs, which makes the purchase closer to buying a side-by-side than to importing a used truck — different paperwork, different price, and a road-legal outcome you cannot assume.

What to check before money moves

• Whether it can ever be road-legal where you live. Settle this before anything else. A current-model kei truck is not FMVSS-certified and is nowhere near 25 years old, so the exemption the rest of this site is built around does not apply to it. A few states run a separate low-speed class that can cover a vehicle like this — Florida defines a “mini truck” in statute and registers one for streets posted at 35 mph or below — but that is a different question from our regulations tracker, which covers 25-year imports. Get the answer from your own DMV, in writing, rather than from the sales page.
• What paperwork you actually receive. Ask whether you get an MSO or MCO, an off-road or off-highway title, or a bill of sale and nothing else. That single answer decides whether you can ever register it, insure it properly, or resell it without explaining it to every buyer.
• Who honours the warranty, and where. A warranty is the real advantage of buying new, so pin down its length, what it excludes, and which shop performs the work. Where a seller is part of a dealer network, the business that takes your money may not be the one that services the truck.
• Parts, once it is out of warranty. A current-model Hijet shares very little with the 1990s trucks the US parts market has grown up around, so the cross-reference tricks that keep an old kei truck cheap to run do not transfer. Ask who supplies parts in five years.
• How they want a deposit. Card or a normal bank transfer is standard. A dealer asking for Western Union, MoneyGram, gift cards or cryptocurrency is a red flag worth walking away from, whatever they are selling.

What a fair price looks like

Compare this against a UTV or a compact utility vehicle at the same money, because that is what it competes with. Comparing it to the used imports elsewhere in this directory will only tell you that it costs three or four times as much, which is true and beside the point — one is a new machine with a warranty and no road-legal path, the other is a 25-year-old truck you may be able to plate.
