Buying from a Japan-based exporter

You are the importer here, not a customer of one. That changes who carries the risk at every step, and it is the single biggest thing people misunderstand about buying this way.

What to check before money moves

  • The auction sheet, and a translation. Japanese auction grades are the closest thing to an inspection you will get. A seller who will not show the sheet is asking you to buy blind.
  • Who handles customs. Ask explicitly whether the quoted price includes shipping, US port fees, customs entry and duty — or whether it is the vehicle only. The gap between those two numbers is thousands.
  • The 25-year date, in months. Eligibility runs to the month of manufacture, not the model year. A truck a few months short is not importable, and that is your problem at the port rather than the seller’s.
  • That an international wire has no chargeback. This is where money actually disappears. It is not an argument against buying this way — plenty of people do it successfully — but go in knowing the payment is final.
  • Your own state, first. Eleven states will not register a kei truck for road use at all. Confirm on the regulations tracker before you commit — a seller has no reason to raise it, and it is the most expensive thing to discover afterwards.

What a fair price looks like

Compare the landed total, never the sticker. An exporter quoting a low vehicle price with shipping, duty and port fees on top can easily finish above a US dealer who quoted one number. The import cost calculator gives you that number, including the 25% Chicken Tax where it applies, so you can tell which side of the trade you are on.
