Kei trucks are street-legal with restrictions in Ohio as of August 2026. A state inspection is required.
Ohio has a specific 'mini-truck' category — four wheels, 660cc or less, 900–2,200 lbs, enclosed cabin and a cargo bed, not originally built to FMVSS. Registration is possible but the vehicle is well short of fully street legal: operation is limited to roads posted 35 mph or below that a local authority has specifically approved by ordinance or resolution, under ORC 4511.214 and 4511.215, and local jurisdictions may add restrictions on top. A state inspection is required, at which the 'enclosed cabin' definition is the usual sticking point.

Visit the DMV and apply for title
Request a title application for an imported vehicle. The Japanese chassis number will serve as the VIN — clerks may need to enter it manually. If the clerk is unfamiliar with kei vehicles, ask to speak with a supervisor.

Pay fees and get plates
Pay titling fees, registration fees, and applicable sales tax. You'll receive a state title, registration card, and license plates.
